I’m after a handheld marine GPS, Any advice?

I just got myself a small boat & plan to use it all around the country (coastal especially). I would be grateful for any suggestions as I don’t know much about them, thanks

There are many styles of handheld GPS units available with different features and price points. Your question suggest that you’re probably quite new to GPS. If that is so, there is probably not much need to spend a fortune on a piece of equipment that has features you don’t understand or are not going to use, Why not start by buying a lower end Garmin or Magellan with basic features and learn how to operate it properly. Then you’ll be able to go out and buy a GPS that’s more suited to your particular needs. Your old GPS becomes a handy backup unit.

Be careful though, GPSs give you information on how to get to a destination in the straightest line, not taking into account things like outcropping points and shallow water. They are in no way a guarantee that you’ll get there safely. Always use proper chart plotting and safe navigation practises. While a GPS is great navigational aid, it can lead you to the site of your next crash just as easily.
